Spider Musings...

Sunday August 2nd.

I woke up early - about 5-ish. The curtains in my room are REALLY thin. It was ok though, I had stitching and reading to keep me occupied. However, Sunday morning, my past-time was Spider Watching/Chasing. Yep, I woke up to find a spider on the wall. My first thought/words were, "Oh my, you're hideous!... ok, you have to go!"

I'm not scared or phobic of spiders, but I don't like them very much. I sat there, watching i...

Ok, so I was interrupted by my attempt at whacking it and squishing it. I whacked the monster with an old rolled up newspaper, but only achieved knocking it to the floor... and now I've lost the little bugger. Arse.

5 mins later...

Yep, I found it again, on the wall. I waited for it to get higher up the wall so I could actually whack it one... and I managed it - twice - and then it fell on the floor. Again. Aaaaargh! Now I'm annoyed! Why won't the thing just DIE?! Or better still, why doesn't it leave? There are at least 5 other rooms it can go exploring in! And that doesn't include the hallway or the wee space between the lounge, kitchen and front door.

And then I got to thikning about how the spider must be feeling, wandering around quite happily, maybe for a few hours, like... only to then find itself chased by a maniac weilding a newspaper!

Actually, sod that. I don't feel sorry for the spider at all. It should have known better than to come in my room. Maybe, hopefully, it'll think carefully next time it decides to come inside a house... unless, of course, spiders have the memory span of a goldfish. In which case, spiders, I think, are destined to be chased and whacked by maniacs with newspapers, but not remembering what happened last time, and forgetting/not remembering to just leave and escape. Idiots. That's it! Spiders; they're idiots.

So maybe I should feel sorry for it. No, no it's not my fault it's stupid/has poor memory. Serves it right for spoiling my morning which should have been taken up with reading and stitching. Bloody spiders.

Ok, now I'm annoyed agian. That could possibly be tiredness though... 5am is catching up with me, as well as that damn spider. Grrr... sod off, already!

I remember reading something about spiders years ago. Apparently, almost all spiders that come into your home are males looking for a mate. Does this mean, then, that males spiders secretly gay? Or are they just curious/experimenting or just not fussy? Hmmm...

Imagine that! A male spider comes into a home thinking of finding himself a lady-spider to settle down with and have baby spiders with... and comes across another spider. Hurrah! says the spider! Only then does he dicover his new-found friend is also male. He considers his options. A) say hello and carry on wandering... B) ask new friend of he's seen any lady-spiders around... or C) Ah, what the heck, you'll do!

Spiders... stupid and confused. Idiots.

Post 5...

Monday, I headed back to Becky's in Hellesdon. Since then I've pretty much done nothing but read numerous crime-fiction novels, and research and contact various people/bands/PR/managers for this uni project.

Right now, I should be in London on Work Experience - again, for a uni project - but I'm here in Norwich instead, and seeing as how one of the projects for the next year is about a pub/music venue in Norwich, I thought I'd make the most of my time here... makes sense to me!

Yesterday (Wednesday) I emailed a few more bands/managers and kind of got somewhere at last! Now I've said that, it'll be even harder. Damn. Trust me to jinx myself. Anyway... in emailing one manager, I actually achieved killing 3 birds with the one stone... um... email. Yes, the manager in question (for Bring Me The Horizon) was also once in two other bands who also played the venue. Hurrah! Watch me fail to find more bands/people willing to help... Bum.

I also found quite a few bands last night that no longer exist, prompting me to call for a total ban on bands splitting up. I've already threatened to remove eyeballs should they dare to break my rules. I'm confident I've made my point.

Post 4

So, I'm a little behind on the updates... Here's a condensed version of events...

Tuesday:

Gem, Piper and I venture into the city and head to McDonalds for lunch. Not my first choice, mind, but Piper likes it. The weather really doesn't know what it's doing - rain, sun, more rain, sun... Just when we dry off, we get wet again. Yuck. Gemma recently bought herself a cheap dance-mat thing for her PS2, and was after a game for it, so we trawled the city to see what was about. The store in the Castle Mall had nothing, but luckily for us, Game had a few. Hurrah! When we got home again, it was time for Piper's tea and then her bedtime. Once Piper was sound asleep, out came the dance-mat and I laughed my socks off at Gemma bouncing around like an idiot, after she'd discovered that her "calories burned" level went up if she bounced like a maniac and didn't follow the arrows. Then it was time to get ticked off, trying to play a Harry Potter game. Ah, fun times!

Wednesday - The Great Tesco Adventure:

With it being a Wednesday, this meant that it was Shopping Day. Gemma's Mum, Edna, normally drives her to Tesco in Sprowston once a week, but today she was in pain after going to see her physiotherapist, so we got on a bus instead. Once there, we had fun trying to push the trolley and in the end decided that Piper would go in the trolley that Gemma pushed, while I battled with the buggy. We probably had more fun than was actually necessary... At least it wasn't a boring shopping trip! We got a taxi home, and I stayed with Piper and watched Bob the Builder whilst Gemma sorted out Piper's tea. We'd have ours when she'd gone to bed. After tea, it was time for more PS2 fun but didn't get very far with the Harry Potter game. I think I had more fun watching Gemma play than trying to play it myself...! I'm so easily amused! Just before bed, I found a "pet" - yep, a spider. Luckily it was only a tiny one. I did manage to trap it under a mug, but I forgot to tell Gem and it escaped... but not before Ruby bopped it, scared both it and herself, and then it disappeared. Ah, well... Once again, I begged for a thunder storm, because it was so damn hot. Once again, my request was denied. Bugger.

Thursday:

Gemma and Piper did their usual and went out for a day in the city with Gemma's friend Becca and her children. Piper likes to call Becca "Uncle Becca" - for some reason she can't get her head around "Aunty Becca". Bless. I stayed in and tried to do some more research for uni stuff, got fed up at going in circles, gave up and played with Ruby instead. Lasange for tea - yum. Piper and I had "special" lasagne. Yay for us! I made like Garfield and snarfed the lot... I was more than full by then, but I was happy! What a pig I am! When Gem and I went to bed, I finally got my storm! Hurrah!

Friday:

Both Gem and I were up early because we both had to head for the library. Gemma does a computer course at the library, while I had to find a book, and email a load of people. Fun. Once again, a lot of "work" was done, but nothing much was accomplished. Typical. Later in the day there was more thunder and lightning, and a lot of rain! Glad I had my brolly with me! Despite this, I still managed to get wet, so I ducked into the NCRC and waited for it to stop a bit. It didn't, so I ventured out anyway and headed for Anglia Square. My brain was slightly fried from trying to find stuff that refused to be found, so I decided I'd take a break and watch Harry Potter in the little cinema at Anglia Square. Hurrah for massive student discounts! Yay!

Saturday:

Saturday was a lazy day. The three of us (Gem, Piper and myself) were up for about two hours before all three of us went back to bed! I woke up just after 3pm - Gem and Piper were still fast asleep, so I got dressed again, and snuck out as quietly as I could and headed for Anglia Square where I hunted out a 13 amp fuse, after the one in the microwave went poof. Whilst out, I headed into the city centre and sent out yet more emails for my research and found a lovely reply from Frank Turner. Brilliant. Slightly miffed that was the only reply to all my emails, but it's a nice start all the same. When I got home, Gemma had made a tuna and pasta bake for tea. Yummy! Loads of veg in it too! Hurrah for vegetables! Piper went to bed around 7-ish, and Gem and I watched pants TV, followed by NCIS: Gibbs = yummy.... Abbie = yummier. In fact, the whole cast are pretty tasty. Ok, so I'm shallow! We had to stay awake as long as Piper was awake. Unlucky for us, Piper didn't actually go to sleep until gone 11pm.

Sunday:

Today Piper was grumpy. Very grumpy. Oh dear. If I didn't know better, I'd say the kid hated me: I put her Dora the Explorer balloon in the corner so I could tidy up the lounge - she screamed like someone was killing her; I pack away her Martian game in its box - again, she screams like someone's killing her and demanded it was left out, depsite the fact she didn't want to play with it. Then, Gemma's mum arrived to take us all to Wroxham for the afternoon at her house... but not before stopping off at "Uncle Eric's" house, where Piper broke a glass placemat, tried to throw a wobbler by laying down and hiding her face... only to realise she was sat on a chair and couldn't. Afterwards, we went to Nanny and Grandad's house. Piper and I were treated to cheese sandwiches and crisps for lunch - yummy! Piper was put to bed in the hope that she'd wake up in a better mood. Edna went to sleep in the armchair, Bill went back to bed, Gemma ran a bath and I occupied myself with a cross-stich: I'm making a name-plate for my nephew Charlie. Everybody's then all awake - well, apart from Piper, and I set the table for dinner. Roast chicken. Yay! Piper refuses to eat anything - even the strawberry Angel Delight didn't get eaten. Oh dear... and we're back to the grumpiness. Lovely. After dinner, Bill had a snooze and the rest of us (Edna, Gemma, Catherine, David and myself) went into the garden. Uncle David "blew up" (read: sneezed), and Catherine tells Piper to poke Uncle David again to see if he'll "blow up" again. Right on cue, David "sneezes" again, leaving us ladies to attempt to sneak back inside whilst Piper is otherwise entertained. Our plan is helped along by a sudden downpour of heavy rain and we all run back inside. Piper is put in "bed clothes" and then Bill drives us back to Gemma's, where Piper is put to bed and Gem and I watch The Pacifier. Gemma tried to convince me that Vin Diesel is "fit". I'm not convinced one bit. Oh well...

Post 3...

Monday...

The day was a bit of a mixture in terms of events.  It began with me being woken up by the sound of Piper, Gemma's 3 year old daughter, singing and telling us/herself that she'd found it.  Quite what she'd found, nobody knows.  Piper knows, though.

After Piper had her breakfast - a banana, a bowl of strawberries and a yogurt, yummy! - I was asked in the most syrupy-sweet way that only children can do, to sit on the floor and play Zoo with some slightly over-sized Lego bricks... It was pretty good fun, actually!  After all that fun, Piper had her mid-morning sleep and Gemma went back to bed, too, so I sat in the living room with Ruby (Gemma's cat) and sewed for about an hour.  Piper woke up again around lunchtime and there was cheese on toast with Hula Hoops for all!  Yay!  Once fed and watered, all three of us went into the city.. well, to Anglia Square, anyway, and traipsed around QD and the little charity shop.  Fun!

When we got back to Gemma's, Piper had her tea, played some more and then went to bed.  After Piper went to bed, Gem and I cooked our tea and watched pants "reality" tv - something about weddings and which one was the best of the four shown.  The prize was a honeymoon.  Nice.  This started a lengthy discussion about weddings - the good, the bad and the hideous.  Oh, there were some tales.  Sadly for some and lucky for us, there was photographic evidence!  We then got talking about what we'd like on our wedding days, should we be lucky enough to have them..  Again, there were some strange ideas.  I kind of like the idea of a themed wedding - maybe Rocky Horror, just for the giggles!  You can just imagine, though, looking back at the photographs and wondering what on earth you were thinking!  Maybe not, eh?

Then we got to talking about the music and the reception and honeymoons.  Both of us agreed on a karaoke machine at the reception.  How much fun would that be?!  Brilliant!  And, of course, there has to be that one child who's been given too much cola, and then spends the rest of the evening running around and chasing the disco lights...  and then we remembered there's something a little bit missing.

Oh well, we can dream, right?

Post 2

So, I've been here over a week now... feels like I've been here forever. Not a good sign.

Today, I move out of Becky's and into Gemma's for a week... before heading back to Becky's for about 6 weeks. To kill time before I head over to Gemma's, I'm in the city library and I'm close to either being arrested for murder, disturbing the peace or, indeed, I may find myself locked in a padded cell. I shall explain...

Sitting in the "Millennium Library" - also known as The Forum in Norwich (in which you'll find all sorts of things, and a diiferent display every week/month), on an uncharacteristically and unexpectedly warm day. I find myself wondering what on Earth happened, and was I asleep/on another planet at the time?

No longer are libraries the silent sanctuaries they used to be, filled with knowledge and curiosities inside the pages of many a book. Of course, with it being a library, there are books. Not a great deal of them available on a Sunday, but they are on the shelves, nonetheless. Now, look around any modern city/town library and I'm willing to bet you'll find at some of these annoyances...

  • The group of youths flocked around the computer hubs and giggling and/or swearing.
  • A family with a screaming child/children.
  • A group of teenage tourists who insist on shouting instead of talking, or chasing each other around the shelves.
  • The afore-mentioned tourists yelling into mobile phones.
  • A large group of youths playing RPG card games and yelling and running around hugging each other.

Right now, I'm surrounded by them all and I'm ever so close to ripping their eyes out or their heads off. Thankfully for them (and for me) I'm forever reminded to be patient and kind, forgiving and gentle.

Instead, I wish it could go back to how it used to be. Stern-looking, bespectacled librarians and big signs requesting silence.

Post 1

Well, I arrived safe and well. The journey from Huddersfield didn't quite go to plan thanks to a cancelled train right at the very start. Great. Not only did I have to go via Leeds to Peterborough instead of Wakefield, I'd also arrive later than planned in Norwich. And it's raining. Wonderful.

I finally get to Peterborough (an hour or so later than planned), to find that the train to Norwich is delayed. And it's still raining. Thinking about it, stood on Platform 4 (and wishing it was 9 and 3/4) almost every journey to and from Peterborough is delayed or cancelled. I must be cursed...

At last the train arrives, and as usual, is packed until we get to Ely. Nice. Still, I have stitching and colouring books to entertain me... not to mention a load of Toni-friendly brownies! Yum!

Yeah... so what have I been up to since I arrived? Not much, really. Just catching up with old friends and getting lost around a town I lived in for over 4 years. Ha! I'm slowly remembering my way around. I'm missing the hills and Huddersfield already and really, I cannot wait to head back up again!

I went to my first church service in the Community Centre. Due to ever-increasing numbers at MWC (that's Meadow Way Chapel!) and running out of space, the church was moved on a Sunday morning to the Community Centre in February 2008. Well, it was quite an experience! There are even more people I don't know/have yet to get to know...! I barely knew everybody last time! It was good to see some old faces and loads more new ones!

I'll write more when I have more to tell...!

Missing you all!

Look after each other, please and God bless every one of you!

Love and chocolate cornflake cakes,
Toni xxx
